Amritsar, March 7
Three months after his marriage, a youth committed suicide by hanging himself with a ceiling fan in his house in Shiv Nagar Colony in the Islamabad area here.
The police have booked his wife and mother-in-law on charges of abetment to suicide, following a complaint lodged by the father of the deceased, who has been identified as Gopal (28). The accused were identified as Simran, alias Seema, and her mother, Usha, both residents of the Gate Hakima area.
Raj Kumar, the complainant, stated to the police that it was the second marriage of the deceased’s wife and they came to know of it only after the marriage. He alleged that this had become the major reason for marital discord between the two. He said his son married Seema on November 30, adding that after one month of the marriage, they came to know that Seema was already married.
He alleged that whenever Gopal expressed his displeasure over the issue, Seema threatened to implicate the whole family in a false case. He alleged that around 20 days ago, Seema went to her parents' home following a dispute with Gopal. He said a couple of days ago, the accused returned home and entered into a verbal duel with the family. He said when his son returned from office, she quarrelled with him and insulted him. After this, she again left and went to her parents' home. Disturbed over this, his son went to his room.
Raj Kumar said in the evening when he went to the room of his son, he found him hanging with the ceiling fan. He alleged that his son took the extreme step of ending his life due to the continuous mental harassment by his wife and mother-in-law.
Neeraj Kumar, SHO, Islamabad police station, said that Seema was pregnant and on the same day she had also approached the police alleging that her in-laws had physically assaulted her and kicked her in the stomach.
“We took her complaint and sent her to hospital for a medical examination and in the evening, Gopal committed suicide,” he said, adding that a case under Section 306, IPC, has been registered against them, following the complaint and further investigations were under progress. He said no arrest has been made so far.
