The 6th annual athletics meet kicked off today at the sports ground of Guru Kashi University (GKU), Talwandi Sabo.
The programme began with a march past by contingents of different teams led by 15 Sikh-Li- Infantary Army band.
Captain Bhim Singh, the Asian games gold medallist, Olympian, and Arjuna awardee from Bhiwani (Haryana) was the chief guest on the occasion.
He laid stress on the need for being physical fit to face the challenges of life.
He said the students who participated in sports developed a balanced personality and did well in their studies.
He motivated the participants to observe discipline in whatever they do at home, work or studies.
The chairman highlighted the university activities, along with the sports facilities that have been established on the campus.
Welcoming the chief guest and other dignitaries, Col Dr Bhupinder Singh Dhaliwal, the GKU Vice-Chancellor, said people at the GKU had devotedly involved themselves to academics.
For a successful life, a balance between sports, discipline and academics is the mantra, he said.
The results on the first day of the event were:
High jump (women): Yadwinder Kaur of Physical Education College, Hardeep Kaur and Jagveer Kaur both from Computer Application College got the first, second and third positions, respectively.
High jump (men): Raj Kumar and Sanjay of Physical Education College won the first and second positions whereas Major Singh of Para Medical College won the third position.
1,500 m (men): Harpreet Singh of Education College, Harmesh Singh and Gurjeet Singh both from Physical Education College won gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.
In 800 m (women): Satveer Kaur of Physical Education College, Sukhwinder Kaur of Engineering College and Amanpreet Kaur of Basic Sciences College stood first, second and third positions, respectively.
Discuss throw: Navdeep Singh, Iqbal Singh and Sukhpreet Singh emerged as winners.
Prof Sukhdevinder Singh Kaurra, GKU PRO, said the final of the major track and field events would continue tomorrow and the prize distribution function would be held at 3:00 pm. — TNS
