Talwandi Sabo, December 18
Guru Kashi University, Talwandi Sabo, will extend the ‘Earn While You Learn’ programme, launched in 2013, to the cultivation of mushroom. Bee-keeping was undertaken under the programme earlier.
Dr BS Chahal, professor at the department of horticulture of the university, said the practical training in mushroom cultivation was essential for the fourth-year students of an agriculture college.
The compost was prepared by a mixture of wheat and paddy straw, which was mixed with nutrients by the students themselves. The spawn (seed) was brought from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana.
The button and dhingree varieties of mushroom were sown during the first fortnight of November. The students have also shown interest in the summer training, which will be given during March-April. They have not only been trained in production but also in harvesting, post-harvesting management, packing, transportation and marketing.
The training programme will not only cover the syllabi of the students but will also make them earn while studying at the university.
Dr NS Malhi, Vice-Chancellor of the university, appreciated the programme and hoped that more such programmes would be started in the future.
