Abetment to suicide case---Former senior civic body official's son eludes police dragnet

The city police is yet to nab the son of former senior deputy mayor Gurcharan Singh Narula, Ujjal, in a case of abetment to suicide. The police had speeded up the investigation after the youth attempted to commit suicide and blamed the Jalandhar police for taking the extreme step.

SHO, Basti Bawa Khel, Kewal Kishore said the police had been conducting raids at the suspected hideouts of the accused but he had been evading arrest. The SHO added that the police had also conducted a raid at Ujjal’s house, but he was not found there.

It may be mentioned that on November 20, a 22- year-old youth had attempted to commit suicide by consuming some poisonous substance at his residence in Basti Gujan. The youth, identified as Deepak Kumar, was shifted to the DMC Ludhiana in a serious state but his condition was now stated to be stable. He had also left behind a suicide note blaming the police.

In the suicide note, the youth stated that on September 12, his brother Lalit had committed suicide due to harassment by Ujjal and the police, instead of arresting Ujjal, was harassing him. Lalit had also left behind a suicide note following which Ujjal was booked in a case of abetment to suicide.

The family had also held a protest against the police in the case.
