City shuttler Abhishek Saini won an action packed boys’ U-19 final against second seed Lalit Dhaiya of Haryana on the concluding day of the North Zone Inter State Badminton Championship at Panjab University here today.
Saini claimed the opening game 21-19, but Dhaiya fought back to level the match with a 24-22 win in the second. In the decider, Saini regained his composure to beat his opponent 21-17 and win the title.
Saini, however, failed to replicate his performance in the men’s singles final as he bowed to fourth seed Rajat Rathore of Rajasthan 12-21 16-21.
In the girl’s U-19 final, Haryana’s Nikita Sharma defeated fourth seed Ananya Goel 21-14 21-12 to win the glittering trophy.
Balraj Kajala and Lalita Dahiya of Haryana beat locals Varun and Jagriti Nashier 21-14 21-18 to win the mixed doubles title.
Top seed women’s pair of Barma Meena and Karma Meena from Rajasthan humbled second seeds Kailash and Daman Rajkumar of Chandigarh 21-14 21-18 in the final.
Third seed Ira Sharma of Haryana, meanwhile, overcame fourth seed Ananya Goel of Delhi to win the women’s singles title.
Ira won the first game 21-17, but Ananya made a come back with a 21-15 win in the following game. Ira, however, dismissed her opponent 21-12 in the decider to lift the trophy.
