A local court on Thursday acquitted four persons of charges of attacking the Burail police post in 2011 after five-year-old Khushpreet Singh was kidnapped and killed even after ransom was paid in presence of the police that had led to a protest.
Those convicted of murdering the boy are already facing life imprisonment. Amarjeet Singh, Kewal Ram, Harwinder alias Kala and Surinder alias Chinda were accused of inciting the mob of hundreds and hurling stones at the police and the police post. However, the prosecution failed to prove its case as the statements of policemen did not match.
On January 5, 2011, the police had found Khushpreet's body. More than 200 persons had gathered near the barrier point of Sector 45/46, close to where the body was found. When the police reached the spot, the mob was raising slogans against them.
Information was then received that hundreds of people had gathered at the Burail police post. The police had alleged that the protesters had manhandled policemen and damaged vehicles and the police post. These four persons were then identified and arrested.
The case
Khushpreet was kidnapped for ransom on December 21, 2010. His body was recovered on January 5, 2011, from a pit in Phase X, Mohali. The three convicts, who were Khushpreet's neighbours, had kidnapped the child. Sukhdev, the mastermind behind the kidnapping, was under a heavy debt and hatched the conspiracy for ransom.
