Don’t encourage begging

At a tender age when children should study in schools, play with toys and enjoy their leisure, many of them are seen on roads seeking alms to make both ends meet due to selfish motives of some miscreants that make them beg under extreme conditions.

Don’t encourage begging

On one hand residents are facing a shortage of water in parts of the city and on the other, Surjit Singh, a resident, shows wastage of water from a leaking pipeline in Sector 35, Chandigarh, on Sunday. He claimed that he brought the matter to the notice of the authorities a few days ago, but to no avail. tribune photo: NITIN MITTAL

At a tender age when children should study in schools, play with toys and enjoy their leisure, many of them are seen on roads seeking alms to make both ends meet due to selfish motives of some miscreants that make them beg under extreme conditions. Masked perpetrators of such deeds are making it a huge business by remaining behind the scenes. The plight of such children is really heart-wrenching. Several initiatives are taken by various institutions and NGOs to check it, but to no avail. Not because they are not true to the work they are doing, but because people like us are not ready to accept that by giving them money we are encouraging begging. The situation is not better throughout the nation as these beggars can be seen begging at traffic intersections, market places, religious places and outside educational institutions. Many of them are mowed down by speeding vehicles. Such children sometimes take to stealing and snatchings. They also disrupt the traffic. There is a need to unmask those elements who are behind the menace. Don’t encourage begging, instead help them by instilling positive ideas and educating them.

A wake-up call

Apropos of Mohit Khanna’s report ‘World class, city railway station fails to offer even basics’ (Chandigarh Tribune, May 6), he deserves ‘kudos’ for highlighting the extremely poor state of affairs at the Chandigarh railway station which aspires to become world class. It’s intriguing to learn that the authorities are devoid of any meaningful action plan to rise to the occasion by offering even some basic facilities to rail passengers. If one truly believes in this report, the railways authorities genuinely owe an explanation to the passengers for being highly indifferent towards their basic needs, more so when they also have to stand in long queues outside ticket windows there with nobody to help or guide them. The escalators that were proudly installed at the station usually remain non-functional much to the discomfort of the passengers who are forced to carry their luggage through long staircases.

Open e-Sampark centre in MHC

There is a need to open an e-Sampark centre at Modern Housing Complex (MHC) in Mani Majra as it is a densely populated area. Senior citizens  and the Resident Welfare Association have also been demanding the same but no action has been taken in this regard. Especially the senior citizens above the age group of 70 are finding it difficult to go to e-Sampark centre in a far location at Mani Majra. I hope that the Administration will look into the matter and take action in favour of residents, especially the senior citizens.
