The committee, which was formed to supervise the 24X7 opening of girls’ hostels at Panjab University, organised its first meeting here on Monday.
Former Chandigarh MP Satya Pal Jain who was also present in the meeting, suggested that a helpline should be started for women students.
“Both boys and girls have equal rights, but an assault on a woman student can destroy her entire life. So, I suggested for starting a helpline, where women students can call when they are in danger. It will be managed by a control room having numbers of SHOs or SPs concerned. The suggestion was agreed to by all,” Jain said.
“The helpline will also strengthen the security management inside the campus,” said Students for Society spokesperson Hassanpreet Kaur.
Prof Navdeep Goyal, chairperson of Physics Department, is heading the committee. Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC) president Kanupriya, vice-president Daler Singh and joint secretary Vipul Atray were also present on the occasion.
