PU slips by 39 positions in world rankings

CHANDIGARH:Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has slipped by 39 positions in the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR)-2017 and is placed at 550th position among 1,000 universities.

Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh, has slipped by 39 positions in the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR)-2017 and is placed at 550th position among 1,000 universities. In 2016, it was at 511 and in 2015, it was at 491. However, at national-level PU has retains its fourth rank since 2015. 

In CWUR-2017, the University of Delhi tops the chart. It has got a world rank of 397 with 43.61 marks, followed by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Delhi, which has a world rank of 399 with 43.6 marks. At number three is the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, with a world rank of 470 with 43.27 marks. The PU is at fourth place with 43.06 marks. 

Prof M Rajivlochan, Director, Internal Quality Assurance Cell, informed that all universities, institutions and the IISc have their unique strengths and get different scores as per different criterias and parameters. “But, it is a matter of satisfaction that the PU is regularly being ranked among the top universities of the country irrespective of the parameters,” he said. 

Eight parameters

The Centre for World University Rankings uses eight objectives to rank the world’s top 1000 universities. 

The quality of education is measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals relative to the university’s size. It has a weightage of 25 per cent. University of Calcutta tops Indian chart with world rank of 159 while the PU is at 353rd rank.

The alumni employment is measured by the number of a university’s alumni who have held CEO positions at the world’s top companies relative to the university’s size. It carried a weightage of 25 per cent. IIT-Delhi tops the chart in India with world rank of 78 while the PU is ar 214.

The quality of faculty is measured by the number of academics who have won major international awards, prizes, and medals and carries a weightage of 25 per cent. Most of the 15 ranked institutes of India in the CWUR have a world rank of 240, including the PU, but the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research has top rank in India with world rank of 149. 

The publications are measured by the number of research papers appearing in reputable journals and have a weightage of five per cent. The IISc tops in India with 337th rank while the PU has a poor rank of 847. 

The Influence is measured by the number of research papers appearing in highly-influential journals, carries a weightage of five per cent. The Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai, tops in India with 440th rank in the world while the PU has 775th rank. 

The citations are measured by the number of highly-cited research papers, having a weightage of five per cent. IIT-Roorkee tops in India with 319th rank in world followed by TIFR at 357. The PU is at third spot with 415th rank. 

The broad impact is measured by the university’s H-index, carries a weightage of five per cent. The IISc tops in India with 455th rank in the world while the PU has 565th rank. 

The patents are measured by the number of international patent filings and carry a weightage of five per cent. Here also, the IISc tops in India with 306th rank in the world. The PU is poorly placed at 825th rank.
