Amritsar, November 14

Irked over poor recovery of property tax, MC Joint Commissioner Nitish Singla has conducted a meeting with zonal superintendents and given them targets to achieve.

Singla instructed the superintendents to seal at least 10 defaulters' properties in every area of the city. The zonal officials were asked to scrutinise 10 major properties in their respective areas. Every zonal superintendent has to issue 300 notices to tax defaulters every week.

Singla also listened to the employees' issues. He provided a jeep and a police team for the sealing of properties.

The MC has set the target to collect Rs 35 crore as property tax till March 31, 2020. The MC has collected only Rs 22.66 crore as property tax for 2018-19. During ongoing fiscal year, the MC has collected Rs 17.57 crore till September 30.

Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu has been focusing on the collection of property tax as it is one of the major sources of the MC revenue. The collection has been improved as compared to last year but the officials claimed that the city had high potential to pay tax.

According to information, of the total 2.85 lakh properties in the city, only 75,000 property owners paid the tax.
