The Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has been adjudged among the top three in the “board and autonomous body” category of Rajbhasha Kirti Awards for “excellent implementation” of the official language (Hindi) in 2014-15. The award was received by BBMB chairman AB Agrawal from President Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi on Monday.

Man beaten up

Dharmender Kaler of Bhularai village was reportedly beaten up by four assailants on Tuesday. He has been admitted to the local Civil Hospital. A case has been registered.

Intoxicant powder seized

The Phagwara police arrested Chhotu Ram of Rama Mandi with 250 gm of intoxicant powder from near Chiherru village on Monday night. They have also arrested Rahul Saini of the local Khaira Road and recovered 100 gm of intoxicant powder from his possession.

1 booked for embezzlement

Fuel station manager Chandan Kumar has been booked for allegedly embezzling Rs 20 lakh of the owners. Harbans Kaur of Mithan Lal and Company alleged Chandan withdrew Rs 20 lakh from his overdraft facility at the bank and then went on leave.

Nambardars seek pay hike

The namardars of the district held a meeting at the Swami Vivekananda  Park and demanded that their honorarium be increased from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,500 per month from this year.

Union alleges harassment

The Markfed Field Employees’ Union on Tuesday threatened to boycott the purchase of paddy if the relatives of a senior policeman, who owns a rice mill here, did not stop harassing them. They alleged the firm owners were annoyed with them as they had taken action against them for embezzling nearly 11,000 paddy bags in 2013-14.

Rs 3 lakh stolen from car

Unidentified persons stole Rs 3 lakh from a Maruti Ciaz car parked on Malout-Dabwali highway in Malout on Tuesday. This is the second such incident reported in the last 24 hours in the district. Victim Shaminder Brar of Malout alleged two motorcycle-borne persons smashed the car window to steal the money that he had just withdrawn from a bank. A case has been registered.
