To provide free of cost education, residential and other facilities to special children, three community homes have been established at Jamalpur in Ludhiana district, Rajpura and Amritsar in the state.
At these homes, the special children will get education and other facilities free of cost. There is already a community home running at Kaputhala (for both boys and girls). The community home in Ludhiana, which was inaugurated on May 23, has eight mentally challenged children.
Kulwinder Kaur, District Social Welfare Officer, Ludhiana, said: “Special children aged 6 years or above (only boys), whose parents are not capable of taking care of them, can be admitted here. The parents should not have an annual income more than Rs 36,000.”
To start with, a community home has been opened at Brail Bhawan at Jamalpur. Eight mentally challenged children have been admitted there. It has the capacity of keeping 15 children. The Community Home provides the facilities of hostel, medical and meals to the special children free of cost. Besides, free yoga, physiotherapy, speech therapy and other physical activities will be organised for the children. The government has a plan to provide them vocational training if their mental health improves.
The Community Home has a teacher, superintendent and other staff.
