PPCB team visits polluted pond at Majra village

A team of Punjab Pollution Control Board today inspected a polluted pond of Majra village near here and collected samples of contaminated water.

The team, led by SDO Atul Kaushal, visited the spot. He stated that they had collected the samples of polluted water from four houses situated close to the pond besides pond water. These will be tested in the lab and the report is expected within around 10 days. The SDO stated that they would forward this report to the higher authorities for further action.

A report on the contaminated pond water was published in Ludhiana Tribune today. There have been around 10 cancer deaths in the village in the past about three years and as many villagers are fighting the deadly disease.

Villagers were of the view that contaminated pond water gets mixed with groundwater that causes harmful effects on their health. The villagers said apart from cancer, this polluted water was also causing liver and gastro diseases.
