The Sarghi Kala Kendra, Mohali staged a Punjabi play 'Desi' exuding rustic humour, at times with didactic sermons at the Tagore Theatre here today.

Inspired by famous classical novel 'Zorba — The Greek'  by Nikos Kazaantzakis, the playwright director, Sanjeevan Singh, sculpted the play which attempted to address too many social issues like gender disparity and respect for female artists, women empowerment, holocaust  of the forced partition in 1947,   widow marriage, drug abuse and one-sided love, among all segments of life and society.

Structured in the deep rural ambience, the inadequately rehearsed play lacked the technical virtuosity in overall composition and direction. The frequently shifting of stage sets and short scenes badly affected the pace of the play.    The soulful music by Padam Sindra and lyrics by Dr Swaraj Sandhu added grace to the show. — OC
