Ashura was observed on the tenth day of Muharram in the winter capital today.

A procession was taken out to pay tribute to Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad, and his companions who were martyred in Karbala. Thousands of mourners across the region participated in the “Majlis” procession taken out from Peer Mitha. The mourners recited “Nohas” and “Marsiah” during the procession. After passing through Lakhdatta Bazaar, Rajinder Bazaar, Shaheedi Chowk and Wazarat Road, the procession culminated at Karbala Complex where Majlis Sham-e-Ghariban was delivered by Moulana Syed Mohammad Abbass Rizvi, an Iranian scholar.

Rizvi stressed upon the teachings of Imam Hussain and said Ashura symbolised the struggle against cruelty, injustice and tyranny of Yazeed. He said Imam Hussain achieved martyrdom because of his devotion to the eternal truth. A procession was also taken out from New Plots by Anjuman-e-Haidery New Plot which culminated and merged with the main procession at Peer Mitha area.

Srinagar: ‘Zuljinah’ processions were taken out in old Srinagar and other Shia-dominated areas of the Kashmir valley on ‘Youm-e-Ashura’ on Wednesday.

Even as the ban on the main Muharram procession remained in place, a ‘Zuljinah’ procession was taken out from Hawal to Zadibal.

Attempts of a few mourners to take out a procession from Abiguzar were foiled by the authorities. Shiites used to take out a grand procession from Abiguzar to Zadibal on ‘Youm-e-Ashura’.

It had been banned after the eruption of militancy more than two and a half decades back. ‘Zuljinah’ processions were taken out in other Shia-dominated areas of the Valley.

Jammu: Thousands across Kargil district observed martyrdom of Imam Hussain on Wednesday.

The mourners, who had assembled in the Kargil town from several villages, beat the chests and cheeks while reciting lamentation and marching towards the main bazaar. These processions were organised by Imam Khoemini Memorial Trust (IKMT) and Islamia School, Kargil.

The mourners raised slogans in solidarity with the people of Palestine, Bahrain, Syria and especially with the people of Yemen and Kashmir. In the processions, marchers also raised slogans against the US, Israel, ISIS and Saudi Arabia accusing them for committing atrocities against the Muslim community.

Addressing the gathering, IKMT chairman Shiekh Hussain Lufti expressed solidarity with the people of Yemen and Kabul. He also condemned the recent attack in Yemen and attack on Shia Muslims in Kabul.

Lufti then highlighted the ongoing crisis between the Islamic movement of Nigeria and the government and appealed for immediate release of Shia cleric Sheikh Ibrahim Zakzaky. Lutfi said, “On Ashura, we also want to convey that we are with Kashmir and we will always stand with Kashmir.” He said the Central and state governments had failed to take concrete steps to restore normalcy in the Kashmir valley.
