The treatment work on the sliding peak of Purnagiri, a religious place in Tanakpur subdivision of Champawat district, could start in the coming months. The work has now been assigned to the Uttarakhand Disaster Recovery Project (UDRP) from the Public Works Department (PWD). The PWD had expressed its inability in treating the hill slopes due tolack of technical know-how, Champawat district administration sources said.
They said Rs 54.15 lakh was sanctioned for the treatment of the peak when cracks appeared near the temple zone. “The state government had sanctioned Rs 54.15 lakh during 2007-8 for the treatment of the sliding portion of the mountain and the work was first assigned to the PWD, then to the KMVN and again to the PWD. But both agencies could not begin the work in time,” said Navin Singh Deopa, a journalist in Tanakpur who has covered the Purnagiri fair for several years.
