What the Indian squad and fans feared over the last 10 days has indeed come true — Shikhar Dhawan has been ruled out of the rest of India’s campaign at the World Cup.

Dhawan had suffered a hairline fracture at the base of his left thumb after being struck by a bouncer from Pat Cummins during his match-winning knock of 117 against Australia in London on June 9.

His left hand is likely to remain in a plaster cast until the middle of July; the final  will be played on July 14. “We have requested Rishabh Pant as the replacement,” said Sunil Subramaniam, the Indian team’s manager.

Pant though would be fortunate to get a game: Dhawan’s replacement in the playing XI, KL Rahul, had made 57 runs against Pakistan. India next take on Afghanistan on June 22. — TNS
