Dehradun, July 16
IIT-Roorkee students, who were recently expelled for poor performance, were today allowed to appear in a re-examination following the Nainital High Court’s order.
“The expelled students who turned up at the institute to appear in the re-examination were allowed to take the test,” said Dean (Academic), IIT (Roorkee), Pramod Agarwal. However, he could not specify the number of such students.
In a reprieve to the students, the court yesterday allowed them to appear in a re-examination scheduled to be held at the institute from today, if they wanted, and also directed the institute to file a counter-affidavit on a petition challenging its decision to expel them.
The interim order was issued by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia on a petition filed by a group of 46 expelled students challenging the Senate’s decision to expel 73 students on the ground that no other IIT in the country had a rule to expel students who score less than five CGPA in semester examinations.
The court has asked the IIT-Roorkee administration to file its counter-affidavit before July 21. — PTI
