Stories of cadaver organ donation are wrought with as much grief as contentment. While cadaver organ donation gives ailing people their lives back, pledging to donate one’s organs and body during one’s lifetime entails an extremely strong will and a brave heart.
Such is the story of Dr IS Kalsi who passed away yesterday but not without leaving a mark. A retired professor from DAV College, Dr Kalsi’s last wish was to be in the service of humanity even after his death. He donated his eyes and body to the PGI for medicinal research.
It was a magnanimous gesture on the part of the Kalsi family, who overcame the tragedy, and consented to honour their father’s last wish, which would not only give the gift of sight to two but also help the PGI, India’s premier health care institute, in conducting invaluable research in the field of medicine. Talking about the family’s noble gesture, Dr Kalsi’s son-in-law Gurdip Singh said, “Our father was always committed to the cause of humanity and was a promoter of world peace.”
He added that the family is hopeful that Dr Kalsi’s valiant act would set an example for others to emulate and people would come forward to pledge and donate their organs.
