Chandigarh, February 10

To end violence against women, Sanjh Jagori, an NGO, in collaboration with the Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 42, PGGCG, Sector 11 and the Chandigarh Police today launched a campaign - One Billion Rising (OBR).

The theme of the NGO’s campaign, which is running into its third year, is ‘revolution’. The medium of protest adopted by its activists is dance.

Eve Ensler, activist and founder of One Billion Rising, said, “We spread awareness through dance and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence.”

The campaign commenced at the PGGCG, Sector 42, where Kamla Meena, DSP Women Cell, apprised the students of the women’s safety app – SMART 24 X 7.

The volunteers gave a performance on ‘Jagori, jagori, umeed jagane aye hain.’ The sound of dhol reverberated the air.

More than 230 students of PGGCG, Sector 42, shook a leg to the tunes of the dhol and sought a change in the consciousness of people.

A flash mob was also organised on re-scripted Punjabi bolis which spell the message of freedom for girls from violence.

A skit ‘Aao badlo’ was performed by the students of PGGCG -11. ‘Zulm zara na sahndi han’ – a new Jugni soulfully sung by Vikram and Misterai encapsulated the pulse and the heart of the struggle and set the crowds swaying.

As many as 4,300 students from PGGCG-42 and Commerce College-42 cheered up the team and joined the dance revolution on the occasion.

Meanwhile, college Principal Mani Bedi lauded the spirit and efforts of students and encouraged them to be the ‘agents of change’to promote their own cause.
