Ludhiana, November 9
Trainees of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre, Ludhiana, gave an excellent performance during the 90th Open Punjab Athletics Championship held at Guru Nanak Stadium from November 5 to 7.
Athletes from the city centre won two gold medals and an equal number of silver medals to bring fame to the institution. Harpreet Singh competed in the long jump event for boys (U-18) and proved his class by establishing a new meet record.
His attempt of 7.14 meters not only fetched him the gold medal but also created a new record. The previous record of 7.11 meters was set by Bikramjeet Singh, also a trainee of the SAI Training Centre, a couple of years ago.
Another trainee of the centre, Gurjinder Singh finished ahead of others to clinch gold medal in the 110m hurdles race for boys (U-18) category whereas his centre mate, Amandeep Singh followed by closely to secure silver medal.
Sharanbir Singh participated in the 110m hurdles in the men’s section and made his presence felt by securing silver medal.
On the basis of their performance during the championship, these athletes have been selected to take part in the upcoming Junior National Athletics Championship slated to be held from November 21 to 23 at Ranchi.
Rakesh Singh, in-charge of SAI Training Centre, Ludhiana, appreciated the boys’ achievements and congratulated BS Bal and Sukhwinder Singh, coaches (jumps and hurdles) for their guidance.
