In a case of alleged medical negligence, a pregnant woman died at the sub-district hospital, Sogam, in Kupwara district here yesterday.

Relatives of Rubeena Akther (35) from Devar village alleged that since the doctor had no gynecologist, a medical assistant and a nurse conducted her delivery which led to her death.

Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Muneer Ahmad Khawaja, who visited the hospital, ordered an inquiry into the incident. “Following labour pain, my wife was admitted in the hospital yesterday and delivered a baby boy two hours later. However, her condition deteriorated post-delivery and she finally breathed her last around mid-night,” said Imtiyaz Ahmad Khan, Rubeena’s husband and a farmer.

After her death, angry relatives protested in front of the hospital in Sogam demanding stern punishment under law to the erring paramedical staff responsible for her death.

The CMO said further course of action would be decided accordingly.
