A girl student of Guru Nanak Dev University (GNDU) committed suicide by hanging herself with a ceiling fan in her hostel room here on Thursday.
The deceased student was identified as Kajal, a resident of Fazilka. She was in her 2nd year of Master of Science (M.Sc) of Botany.
The incident came to light when girls found her room locked and saw her hanging from a mesh door of her room.
They immediately alerted the security staff and broke open the door. They took her to a private hospital where doctors declared her dead.
The incident sent shockwaves in the university premises.
Sukhdev Singh, security officer, told that the deceased student was alone in her hostel room (104) in Girls hostel number 4.
“At around 7.45 pm, when other girls of the hostel came and found her room bolted from inside. When repeated knocks failed to evince any response they peeped through the mesh door and found her hanging. Immediately she was shifted to a private hospital where doctors declared her brought dead,” he said.
He said the reason behind her taking the extreme step of ending her life was yet to be ascertained.
“We did not get any time for searching her room in case she had left any suicide note. We have locked the room and now going to search the same after taking the police authorities along with us,” he said.
