Rewari, January 21
Two cousin sisters belonging to the Scheduled Caste category have been elected sarpanch of their husbands’ villages falling under the Nahad block of Rewari district. Kashmira (37) emerged victorious from Bahala village, while her cousin Sanjog Devi (32) has become the sarpanch of Bawwa village.
Both the villages, which are located at a distance of 3 km, were reserved for SC this time. Sanjog is a graduate and Kashmira is metric pass.
Their uncle Jagat Singh is also trying his luck for the post of sarpanch from Boria Kamalpur village.
“Mothers of Kashmira and Sanjog are real sisters and both families are glad over their victory,” said Prem, Kashmira’s husband.
Though Prem, too, fulfills the condition of academic qualification, but could not file his papers due to losing his matriculation certificate, hence he had to field his wife.
Dharamvir, Sanjog’s father-in-law, intended to field his wife Vidhya Devi, but could not do so following the Supreme Court’s verdict endorsing the state government’s decision of minimum education qualification for the candidates.
“Sanjog was fielded in the elections after Vidhya got ineligible,” said Dharamvir. Kashmira emerged victorious by a margin of over 400 votes. “I had never imagined that I will contest the election and villagers will make me the sarpanch,” said Kashmira.
