Members of the BKU said they would not allow the auction of even an inch of agriculture land and gherao the officials if they visit the village to carry out the process.
During a farmers’ panchayat here today, state BKU president Gurnam Singh said that they were ready to confront the government on the issue of farm loans as the state and the Union governments were apparently siding with the big business houses and not willing to even listen to the problems of the crisis-ridden farmers. “We are ready to shed our blood if the government is bent upon to recover the loan by auctioning land and arresting farmers,” he said.
Besides Makdani farmers, three farmers of neighbouring Tiwala village had also received auction notices from the same branch of the Sarv Haryana Gramin Bank, he said, adding that several residents of Bhagwanpur village in Kurukshetra district had received arrest notices for defaulting on loan repayment.
Sukhwant Singh, convener of the panchayat, said the farmers were pushed to the corner as their financial condition had gone from bad to worse. The intimidating tactics of the government and the banks had further burdened the farmers, he said. “I urge the farmers not to take any extreme step. Soon, we are going to launch a statewide agitation over farm loan waiver and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report,” he added.
