Skill development takes centre stage

In a first, Punjab has prepared students who will participate in “National Skill Competition 2018” that will further open avenues for “World Skill Competition 2019”, which will be held in Kazan, Russia.
Minister of Technical Educational and Industrial Training Charanjit Singh Channi, on Tuesday said that the national and world skill competition fest would give exposure to youths.
At present, there are 26 categories of skills, including auto body repair, cooking, bakery, beauty therapy, graphic design etc. As many as 52 students at the state level under the 26 different trades have been selected. The northern region level competition will be held in Lucknow between May 30 and June 2.
Punjab Skill Development Mission mission manager Parbinder Kaur said, “It is for the first time that Punjab will send children in skill development contest . The selected students have learned skills through internet.”
Deepak Kumar (20) of Samrala said, “I have designed and developed my college website. Our college website was really bad as it had no proper information. I made the website interactive and informative. I have learned a lot of things from the internet and also took online video lessons.”
Deepali Arora (20), has chosen ‘bakery’ as her trade. Despite being a fashion designing student, she took online bakery lessons.
