Hooch deaths: Oppn wants CM Yogi to quit

LUCKNOW: Opposition members in the Vidhan Sabha on Monday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the hooch tragedy in the state killing close to a hundred persons.

Lucknow, February 11

Opposition members in the Vidhan Sabha on Monday demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath over the hooch tragedy in the state killing close to a hundred persons.

The Opposition also demanded a CBI probe to be monitored by a sitting High Court judge, but the ruling party refused to accept both the demands. As soon as the House assembled, the Opposition demanded a debate on the matter setting aside all business, but Speaker HN Dikshit refused to oblige, which led to repeated adjournments and finally the question hour was washed out.

During zero hour, SP Saharanpur Sadar MLA Sanjay Garg charged the BJP government of diluting the matter claiming that the deaths had occurred after drinking poisonous liquor during a ‘tehravi’ ceremony at a village in Haridwar. He claimed the fact of the matter was that “88 persons of 44 villages in Saharanpur had died in the tragedy, most of whom were not present at the ceremony”.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Suresh Khanna said a SIT had been set up and it would furnish its report within 10 days. — TNS
