District panels set up to ensure skill development initiatives

JAMMU: In a bid to take skill development mission to the grassroots level, the Jammu and Kashmir Government today constituted the District Skill Committees (DSC) “to ensure quality, consistency and convergence in the skill ecosystem of a particular district.

In a bid to take skill development mission to the grassroots level, the Jammu and Kashmir Government today constituted the District Skill Committees (DSC) “to ensure quality, consistency and convergence in the skill ecosystem of a particular district.

The panels will generate awareness of various initiatives launched by the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India. They will work as the district-level focal points and local facilitator “for ensuring and sustaining skill nourishing initiatives at the district level”.

According to a government order, the broad areas of activities of the committees are to assess the nature and magnitude of the skill gap across the districts and suggest appropriate measures in terms of vocational or other training to bridge the gap.

“The committee will generate awareness among the unemployed youth about the industry demand for various vocations or trades, project future of the industry at the district level and suggest and explore methods to increase livelihood opportunities across the districts and facilitate enhanced job creation,” the order reads.

The panels will also review the infrastructure, machinery available with various vocational training providers engaged in implementing Central and state government schemes across the district. Besides, they will coordinate the efforts of various government departments and industry in the district for building and nurturing a valuable skill base with regards to the local art, crafts and trade.

“The panels will conduct training and create a pool of trainers in various trades across the districts to facilitate the implementation of various skill development initiatives of the Central and state government. They will also explore and make use of satellite base district learning (SBDL) massive open online courses (MOOC) and other digital technology to facilitate and enable improvement of learning ,” the order said.

The panels will also organise convocations for vocational graduates across the district to instill a sense of pride and accomplishment thereby encouraging the concept of self-employment.
