Prof Romshoo gets ISRO award

SRINAGAR: In view of his outstanding lifetime contribution to the development and application of space technology for earth and environmental sciences, the Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), conferred the prestigious Satish Dhawan National Award for 2018 on Professor Shakil Romshoo.

In view of his outstanding lifetime contribution to the development and application of space technology for earth and environmental sciences, the Indian Society of Remote Sensing, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), conferred the prestigious Satish Dhawan National Award for 2018 on Professor Shakil Romshoo.

The award carries a cash prize of Rs1 lakh, a medal and a citation. Professor Romshoo has won various other prestigious awards for his academic achievements and notable among them are the National Geoscience Award conferred by the President of India in 2013 and the Kasumigaura International Prize conferred by the Government of Japan in 2009.

With PhD in water resources engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan, and MS in Space Technology from the Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, Professor Romshoo has a distinguished academic and research background with over 32 years’ professional experience.Currently, Dr Romshoo is Professor and Head of Geoinformatics, Kashmir University, India.

Professor Romshoo is a member of several international, national and state-level policymaking committees focusing on earth and environmental issues of scientific and societal importance. Recently, Romshoo was granted Rs 10 crore for the establishment of Center of Excellence in glaciological and climate change studies in the western Himalayas at the Kashmir University. He already has established the first National Ice Core Laboratory for paleo-climatic studies in Himalayas at the Kashmir University.
