The University of British Columbia(UBC), which is rated in top 20 Public universities in the world, has shown keen interest in Youth Football Club Rurka Kalan (YFC), Rurka Kalan village endeavours to uplift the rural children and the youth of the state.

A 17-member delegation from the university had arrived at Rurka Kalan village to spend three weeks at the village.

The delegation is headed by Prof Dr Stephen Berg of the Education Department of the university. There are 15 students from Education and Kinesiology Department of the university. The students were accorded warm welcome by the villagers and the YFC.

The students were helping the YFC staff and children in various projects, including football coaching, special education centre and sports for development programmes.

They had been to Government Schools in Rurka Kalan, Bansian and Bundala to see the working and infrastructure. As the YFC Rurka Kalan has been closely working with nearly 31 Government Schools of the area. The students also held demo classes for the teachers and volunteers.

Dr Berg and his team also extended various tips and techniques to make the learning purposeful. The students from the Education Department worked with the team at the YFC to develop new sports for development sessions.

“We are happy to be here and feel honoured to contribute to the work of the YFC. It has been a pleasure to be with such a warm and helpful community. I hope to come back soon and spend more time here” said Maddison Lyon (studying Mater of Education).

There were 6 girls accompanied by their coach Craig Smith. These girls were the part of university’s football team. The girls namely Linsey, Karlee Brown, Alyssa Cormiers ,Madison Loranjo and Stinson Andrea were coaching young girls of the Academy every day.

Coach Craig Smith also lauded the YFC. Another group of students worked with key staff and children of the YFC’s Special Children Centre ‘Prerna’. They worked on developing new processes and methods to help special children of the centre.

Dr Stephen Berg said: “The university is keen to take the partnership further. University students also paid a visit to the Golden Temple and McLeod Ganj.
