IGP-led team visits spot, talks to forest staff

Chandigarh, July 13

Punjab DGP Suresh Arora has formed a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the attack on forest officials at Seonk village in Mohali by illegal sand miners last month. The SIT, led by the IGP, Ropar Range, V Neerja, visited the spot where the attack took place and also the illegal mining spot and met forest officials who were attacked except Devinder Singh, who is admitted to the PGI.

Other members of the SIT include the SDM, Kharar, Superintendent of Police, Mohali, Harbir Atwal, the SHO of the Mullanpur police station, the District Forest Officer of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar and a mining officer, who is yet to join the team. The SIT has decided that use of sand for authorised purposes such as levelling of land and construction should also be regulated.

SIT head V Neerja said the team on Thursday visited the spot of the attack as well as the spot from where the sand was mined. The IGP said, “Mining is currently not taking place in the area.” She said they would also work on
