Aparshakti Khurana, who was last seen in movies like Stree and Luka Chuppi, is excited about his new release Kanpuriye, which recently premiered on Hotstar. Aparshakti talks about the movie, his role, the bond with brother Ayushmann and, of course, Chandigarh.

What is the movie Kanpuriye about?

Kanpuriye is about the ‘real’ Kanpur. You will see people talking on very random topics, but all in the real sense. So it’s a very entertaining film.

What’s your role in the film?

My character’s name is Jaitun Mishra, who works in a leather factory. He is a simple boy, who just wants a job. He is a little confused about his personal and professional life, and is trying to maintain a balance.

Since you are from Punjab, for portraying a character from Kanpur what all preparations did you do?

I have good exposure when it comes to picking up and learning new accents. The unique part about Kanpuriye was that the makers did not want the dialect to be very regional. So it was easy.

How is your look like?

It’s a chilled-out, simpleton look. Normal trouser pants and sweaters. No fancy hair.

Did you always want to become an actor?

No, I wanted to become a cricketer. In fact, I was the captain of Haryana cricket team in college under-19 level. But then I left sports and joined law. When I was practicing law, I realised that I was not fit for the job as I was not enjoying it. I used to play guitar and sing, so joined a radio station as an RJ and also did some theatre. My life changed after hosting and anchoring shows; then acting followed.

What’s your take on the increasing digital craze?

I think the craze is not about the web and digital world. It’s about the content that’s been put out there. Whether it’s the big screen or the web, only good content works at the end of the day.

There is this recent debate on censoring web content. What are your thoughts on it?

I think filmmakers should be given a lot of freedom to explore their world. Whatever we see on screen is a reflection of our lives. If a character is seen abusing, then what’s the harm? We’ve all seen that in our families at some point in time!

Do you feel the pressure when compared with your brother Ayushmann Khurrana?

To be honest, no one has ever compared us. Our journeys are totally different and my brother has been wise enough to advise me that I must walk my own path.

What is your dream project?

I would love to do a sports-centric movie, maybe a biopic on Yuvraj Singh or Virat Kholi. In fact, I would love to do a film on Fauja Singh, the oldest marathon runner alive.

What’s next in the pipeline?

There are two films lined up for release — Street Dancer and Pati Patni Aur Woh. And some more projects.

Since you stay in Mumbai now, what do you miss the most about Chandigarh?

Only food! Family and friends come and go, but only food is what I miss, especially the kulchas.
