The Education Department of Punjab is going an extra mile to fill seats in government schools. Efforts are being made to enrol more students at the primary, middle and senior levels. Letters are also being issued to the DEOs and BPEOs to get the minutest details about the new admissions in various government schools.

In a recent letter, issued by Krishan Kumar, Secretary, Punjab School Education Board, to all DEOs and BPEOs, he has asked the officials to encourage admission of new students in schools.

He also says the teachers, staff, and principals who had made a change by enroling more students should be appreciated. Besides, the pictures and names of them should be circulated across the schools as an encouragement and a copy of the same should be sent to the head office.

The letter also says if schools had any problems, those should be solved on a priority basis. The schools which are low on admission registrations, must be visited by the officials to know the causes of disinterest. Gram panchayats should be roped in as well to encourage more registrations, says Krishan Kumar.

Gurwant Kaur, a teacher at a government school said efforts were being made so that the villagers feel motivated to send their wards to school. If such campaigns are promoted and importance of education is told to the villagers, then there could be a change for the better.

A resident of Dugri said she hired a 12-year-old boy as a domestic help who readily agreed to work. But for the past five or six days, he had not turned up. We got to know that he had got admission in a school. His mother visited my home and told me that some teachers had convinced them to send him to school.
