The District Education Office, Ludhiana, has organised a free ‘Math Summer Camp’ for students of government schools but with an eligibility criterion that keeps the below average performers devoid of the facility.

Many government teachers are of the opinion that weak students should be given more consideration and attention.

The Class X students who have secured 75 per cent or above are only eligible to get themselves register for the camp. The ‘Padho Punjab Padhao Punjab’ math team will carry out the summer camp, which is scheduled from June 4 to June 21 at Malwa Khalsa Senior Secondary Model Gram. The students will be taught by the district mentors (DM) and block mentors (BM) math.

While condemning the criterion, Sukhdarshan Singh of Nakal Virodhi Front said, “Those who have already secured better marks are given special attention. However, it is the weak students who have secured below 50 per cent should be uplifted and given a chance. The students with 75per cent are already in the creamy layer.”

As the government had appointed BM and DM from the government school itself, but the sanctioned post in the respective schools remains vacant owing to which the results of many schools have suffered. “In our school, the mathematics teacher was appointed as BM and her post remained vacant”, added Sukhdarshan.

Gurpreet Singh, co-coordinator of Sanjha Adhiyapak Morcha, said, “The education sector has become survival of the fittest. The non-achievers are made to sit in a different room. Only top layer is being polished. We are shunning poor students. The principle of education is to seek inclusiveness. The Right to Education does not encourage discrimination among students on the basis of marks.”
