Ludhiana: A 42-year-old man died after he fell into the Sidhwan Canal on Thursday evening. The deceased has been identified as Kuljit Singh. SHO, Daba police station, Pavitar Singh said the deceased was a computer mechanic and was sitting along the canal. He said it seemed he fell into the canal accidentally. The SHO said it was yet to be verified whether the man committed suicide or not, as no suicide note was recovered. Sources said the deceased was in depression as he was not on good terms with his wife. Suspecting no foul play, the police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPc. After conducting the postmortem, the body was handed over to the family.
Valuables destroyed in fire
A house in Kot Mangal Singh caught fire in the wee hours on Friday. A marriage was to be solemnised on Sunday and furniture and other valuables worth several lakhs were gutted in the incident. Bhupinder Kaur said the marriage of her daughter Gurvir Kaur was due on Sunday. “A lot of shopping, including that of furniture, garments and other gifts, was done in the past few days for the marriage. All family members were sleeping in the courtyard, while most of the marriage material was in the room. Around 4 am, we saw smoke coming out of the room. Short circuit could be the reason,” she said, adding that two fire tenders arrived to douse the flames. The loss could be around Rs 4lakh, she said. tns
Miscreants flee with Rs 1.5 lakh
Khanna: Unidentified persons robbed Rs 1.5 lakh from a stationary car by breaking its window near the court complex in Khanna at 12.10 pm on Friday. Chattisgarh resident Rajinder Singh Benipal, had come to Khanna for some legal work. He shifted to Chattisgarh in 1960 with his family. He reached PNB Khanna and withdrew Rs 1.5 lakh and put it in a bag and went to the court to meet his advocate. He parked his car near the complex. When he came out, he found the window of the car broken and the bag containing the money, cash book and letter pads missing. As per SHO City Khanna Rajnish Sood, they were inquiring the matter and would take legal action in this regard. oc
Two peddlers held with heroin
Ludhiana: Officials form the police Division No. 2 have nabbed two drug peddlers and recovered 350 gram of heroin from their possession. The accused were identified as Rohit of Issa Nagari and Rohit Masih of Ludhiana. The police said two pedestrians were stopped during routine checking near the Civil Hospital and drug was recovered from them. TNS
Three travel agents booked
Ludhiana: The police have booked three travel agents on the charge of duping a resident on the pretext of sending him abroad. The accused have been identified as Sourav Arora, Ashu Thaper and Subash Chaudhary, all residents of Harnam Nagar. Complainant Gulam Murtaza of Jharkhand told the police that the accused had taken Rs 1.40 lakh from him for arranging a visa, but they failed to fulfil their promise. No arrests have been made so far. TNS
Woman peddler held with drugs
Ludhiana: The Anti-Narcotic Cell of the city police nabbed a woman peddler and recovered 100 gm of drug powder from her. The accused was identified as Manjit Kaur, a resident of Talwandi Kalan village. ASI Major Singh said acting on a tip- off, a woman was stopped for checking at naka in Fatehpur Gujjra village. During search of her belongings drug powder was recovered, he added. In a similar case, the narcotic cell arrested Pawan Kumar of Talwandi Kalan village with 100 gram of drug powder. The CIA unit also nabbed another drug peddler Vijay Kumar of Goraya village and recovered 100 gram of drug powder from him. TNS
