Man gets 10-yr jail for smuggling opium

LUDHIANA: Court of Additional Sessions Judge Amar Paul has convicted Lovkesh Kumar of Dugri of smuggling of 2.

Ludhiana, November 16

Court of Additional Sessions Judge Amar Paul has convicted Lovkesh Kumar of Dugri of smuggling of 2.8 kg of opium. He was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for 10 years. A fine of Rs 1 lakh was also imposed on the convict.

Delivering the verdict, the court held that the prosecution had successfully proved the guilt of the accused beyond any reasonable shadow of doubt. The court also declined the plea of leniency raised by the convict.

However, the court acquitted co-accused Balwinder Singh of BRS Nagar, Ludhiana, finding no evidence against him.

A case against him was registered at the Model Town police station on November 18, 2012, under the NDPS Act. — OC
