SAI girl trainees selected for national weightlifting meet

LUDHIANA: Two trainees (girls) from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre, Ludhiana, will be represent the Punjab contingent in the Sub-Junior and Junior National Weightlifting Championship slated to be held at Nagpur from December 14 to 22.

Ludhiana, December 13

Two trainees (girls) from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Training Centre, Ludhiana, will be represent the Punjab contingent in the Sub-Junior and Junior National Weightlifting Championship slated to be held at Nagpur from December 14 to 22. The duo left for Nagpur on Wednesday.

Sheena Maggo and Luxmi Kumari, both students of Government Girls College, were selected on the basis of their performance in the Punjab State Weightlifting Competition held from November 2 to 4 at Sunam in Sangrur district.

The girls had finished among medal winners in the Punjab State Weightlifting Competition held here at Guru Nanak Stadium. The competition was organised by the Punjab Sports Department, under the Tandarust Punjab mission, wherein participants from across the state took part in different weight categories.

Sheena clinched gold medal in the below 81-kg weight group whereas Luxmi annexed silver medal in the below 59-kg category.

At Nagpur, Sheena will compete in the up to 81-kg section and Luxmi will be seen in action in the below 55-kg group. Sheena Maggo finished at the fifth place in the All-India Inter-University Weightlifting Championship held at Guntur in Andhra Pradesh from November 27 to December 2. The performance was considered while finalising the participants for the Khelo India Games to be held in Pune from January 9 to 20.

Harbans Singh, in-charge of the SAI Training Centre, wished the girls good luck for the national championship.
