The Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertaking (CICU) organised a programme ‘Enlighten on GST Act and Implementation’, in association with the Excise and Taxation Department.

Avtar Singh, CICU president, welcomed Excise and Taxation Officer Harsimrat Kaur and ETO Baldeep Karam Singh. Avtar said there was a need to get the information and inputs about the implementations of the Goods and Service Tax (GST).

Harsimrat Kaur said, “Amalgamating a large number of Central and state taxes into a single tax will mitigate cascading or double taxation in a major way and pave the way for a common national market.”

She said, “From the consumer point of view, the biggest advantage will be in terms of reduction in the overall tax burden on goods, which is currently estimated to be around 25 per cent to 30 per cent.”

“The GST will also make Indian products competitive in domestic and international markets. Studies show that it will boost the economic growth. The tax, because of its transparent and self-policing character, will be easier to administer,” she added.
