A ‘Doctor’ of the Doraha area turned out to be the kingpin of a gang involved in car lifting and theft cases.

Giving details of the Naina Devi shootout case, Mohali SSP Kuldeep Singh Chahal said Goldy Mashi, kingpin of the gang whose one member, Samuel Masih, alias Sunny, was gunned down in an encounter by the Mohali police on July 14, was known as ‘Doctor’ in the Doraha area.

“This matric pass criminal was a quack and was running his self-styled clinic in Doraha, where he used to give ‘desi’ medicines to patients. His cousin, Jasbir Singh, alias Sanju, also a member of the gang, used to help him at his shop,” said Mohali SSP Chahal.

The Mohali police have already arrested Sanju and Varun Sood, two accomplices of the Goldy Masih gang, from the Gharuan area and recovered a country-made .12 bore revolver, along with two cartridges, a toy pistol, Ritz car (used in the recent carjacking case in Mohali) and chilli powder from their possession.

Goldy and Amarpreet Singh are already in the custody of the Bilaspur Police after the encounter in question.

The SSP claimed that Amarpreet Singh’s mother used to take medicine from this self-styled doctor due to which her son (Amarpreet) had come in contact with him and became his gang member.

“Goldy used to steal registration cards of cars in Doraha and Ludhiana areas after breaking windowpanes. Then, gang members planned to snatch the car of same make,” said SSP Chahal.

He said on the night of July 13, the gang members had planned to snatch either white Verna or white Swift DZire car as they had two stolen original RCs of a Verna car and a Swift DZire car.

“To execute their nefarious plan, they took the Ritz car on rent and came together in Kharar where they had consumed liquor in the car. Goldy and Sunny were having pistols, while the others were armed with iron rods. Then they targeted the Verna car and it was Sunny, who opened fire to scare the car owner before taking it away,” said SSP Chahal.

After carjacking, Goldy, Sunny and Amarpreet went towards the Ropar side in the Verna car, while Sanju and Varun, who were in the Ritz car, separated from them at Saneta and went to Varun’s residence at Morinda.

The Gurdaspur police had also arrested Goldy in March this year for snatching a Xylo car. Later, he was released on bail last month only. “Further investigations are on in the case,” said SSP Chahal.
