MBBS students of AIIMS report at Faridkot varsity

About 50 MBBS students, comprising the first batch of AIIMS Bathinda, reported at Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) for the verification of their documents on Monday.

As the building of AIIMS Bathinda is still under construction, the first batch of MBBS course of this institute would attend classes at Guru Gobind Singh Medical College, a constituent medical college of the BFUHS at Faridkot.

These students are expected to be shifted to Bathinda next year, when the campus of AIIMS Bathinda is expected to be ready.

Due to non-completion of the AIIMS building this year, as many as four educational institutions had offered their premises in this area for classes of the first batch of MBBS. However, a team of senior doctors fromPost Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, selected BFUHS for the purpose. 

No decision on EWS quota in private colleges

Following the extension given by Medical Council of India (MCI) and Union Health Ministry to file for seats under the economically weaker section (EWS) quota, the Baba Farid University of Health Sciences (BFUHS) on Saturday released the information bulletin-cum-brochures of three private medical colleges in the state, giving the details of MBBS and BDS seat matrix in these colleges.

As per these brochures, there is no provision for 10 per cent EWS quota in Sri Guru Ram Das Medical College, Amritsar, Adesh Medical College, Bathinda, and CMC Ludhiana for MBBS and BDS seats. Out of the eight medical colleges offering 1,125 MBBS seats in the state, only three government medical colleges — one each in Amritsar, Patiala and Faridkot — will have 10 per cent EWS quota. As there is still confusion about the total increase in seats in these three government medical colleges for the EWS quota, so the BFUHS plans to fill the quota seats in the second round of counselling, sources in the university said.

The first round of counselling starts on Tuesday, so the university has decided that the seats under quota should be filled in the second round of counselling, a senior functionary in the BFUHS said. “We are hopeful that by the time the second round of counseling starts, the increased quota of MBBS and BDS seats for EWS candidates will be available with the university,” the officer added.
