The property tax wing of the Municipal Corporation issued a notice to 127 showrooms situated in a local shopping mall on the GT Road in the past three days. The mall authorities had paid the tax collectively according to the size of the showrooms. MC officials said the showroom owners had taken property on rent in the mall and according to the rules, they had to pay the tax separately as per the rent amount.
The mall authorities had paid the tax by self-assessment. During scrutiny, the MC officials found that the tax should have been deposited separately as the showrooms are rented properties.
Superintendent Dharminderjit Singh said, “We have carried out physical verification and found that the authorities of the mall collected rent from the showroom owners. So, they have to pay 7.5 per cent tax on the rent. The matter is in the notice of Mayor Karmajit Singh Rintu and senior MC officers. We have served notices and will take further action as per the directions of the MC Commissioner.”
