The police on Friday claimed to have arrested two persons and seized 24 kgs of opium from their possession. They had reportedly brought the opium from Manipur.
On the directions of the SSP, an anti-drugs team was constituted, which was headed by SP (D) Swaran Singh Khanna, and included DSP Gurpreet Singh and CIA staff.
When the team was patrolling along the water channel near the Buddha Dal Gurdwara, a grey colour Datsun Go car came from Gill Kalan village side and during checking, 24 kgs of opium was recovered from the accused.
They have been identified as Kawaldeep Singh alias Kawal, a resident of Imphal, and Sanjiv Roshan alias Parmod Giri, a resident of Bihar.
The police claimed that during interrogation, both accused had admitted that they brought opium at Rs 1.10 lakh per kg and would sell it at Rs 1.35 lakh per kg in Punjab.
They had taken a rented room at Bachtar Nagar in Ludhiana to store the drug. They started the smuggling business five months ago.
At first, they brought 15 kgs of opium and now, they had started bringing 30 kg. Till now, they have supplied around three quintals to their customers in the state.
A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused at the Rampura (City) police station and further action has been initiated against them.
The police claimed that they would present the accused in the court on Saturday and would seek their remand so that their link with drug smugglers could be interrogated.
