Dr BS Bal, former principal of Government Medical College (GMC), has complaint to the Health Department regarding the sale of “synthetic eggs” at a branded retail store. Health officials will collect samples from the store. Last week, samples were collected from three shops at Ram Bagh reportedly on a complaint of Rajya Sabha MP Shwait Malik.

Talking to The Tribune, Dr BS Bal said he tested the eggs using method published in a local Hindi newspaper. “The eggs bought from a prominent retail store failed the test that I conducted at home. I took the boiled eggs to the retail store, but they did not recognise my complaint. I talked to their manager and supplier of eggs from Delhi, but they didn’t give satisfactory response,” he alleged.

Civil Surgeon Dr Hardeep Singh Ghai said, “I have asked the health officer to collect samples from the store from where Dr Bal bought the eggs to verify the fact. We collected egg samples from Ram Bagh area last week and test report is awaited. If the complaint is found true, strict action will be taken.”

Rumors regarding the sale of synthetic eggs are common as a video of manufacturing of plastic egg in China has gone viral on WhatsApp. A poultry farm owner has claimed that with the rise in temperature, eggs often get rotten and people perceive it as plastic egg under the influence of viral videos. “How can plastic egg be financially viable when there are very few takers in scorching heat?” he questioned.
