BJP MLA Kavinder Gupta new J&K Speaker
Jammu, March 18
BJP MLA Kavinder Gupta was unanimously elected the Speaker of the 12th Assembly of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Basharat Bukhari moved a motion in the Assembly seeking his election to the post, while Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh seconded the motion.
Gupta, an MLA from Gandhinagar constituency in Jammu district, was elected with voice vote with no one vote against the motion.
After the election, he was taken to the Speaker's chair by Singh, Basharat Bukhari and NC'S Mubarak Gul.
Chief Minister Mufti Mohmmad Sayeed, former Chief Minister and NC Legislative Party leader Omar Abdullah, Singh, Congress Legislative leader Nawang Rigzin Jora, CPI (M) leader MY Tarigami welcomed and congratulated the new Speaker. — PTI
