Chandigarh, March 5
In the four-cornered contest for the post of president of the Chandigarh Club, the candidates are making full use of social media and other modes of campaigning to woo voters.
The elections for the post of president and executive members will be held on March 7 after a gap of 11 years.
Sandeep Sahni, Ravinder Pali, AK Sinha and RK Mittal are contesting for the top post of the club. Their family members and friends are also campaigning through the social media, SMSes and meeting one-to-one with Chandigarh Club members.
While the current president, Sandeep Sahni, is highlighting the works done during his tenure, other three candidates are seeking votes to bring change in the club.
Besides, 21 candidates are in the fray for the posts of eight executive members of the Chandigarh ClUb.
Club has 8,000 members
The Chandigarh Club, spread over 8.5 acre, is the oldest club in the city and is functioning since 1957. The club has around 8,000 members, who have voting rights. These include the region’s who’s who —politicians, bureaucrats and businessman.
Last elections took place in 2004
The last elections of the club were held in November 2004 when Mukesh Bassi was elected its president.
In 2011, when Bassi was elected as a councillor in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, he had resigned from the president’s post. Thereafter, the vice-president of the club, Sandeep Sahni, was made the president.
Sources said earlier, the elections were not held as different cases pertaining to the club were pending in the court.
