Dharamsala, September 11

A tourist from Punjab was arrested for allegedly peeping into the washroom of a dhaba near Dharamsala being used by a girl student from Delhi last night. A case of molestation was registered against the accused.

A group of students from St Stephen’s College, Delhi, and Delhi University had come to Dharamsala for trekking in the Kareri lake area.

Puneet, a member of the group, said they were returning to Delhi and halted for dinner at a dhaba in Ranital of Kangra district last night.

Some tourists from Punjab also stopped at the dhaba. When a girl went to washroom, one of them allegedly followed her and tried to peep into the room. She raised the alarm and students caught him. The mischief was also caught on a CCTV camera.

Suresh Thakur, another group member, alleged that there was an altercation between students and the tourists. The students said the police reached the spot and tried to discourage them from lodging a complaint. They also alleged that the police misbehaved with them and allowed the tourists to escape.

SP Vimukt Ranjan said the accused was nabbed from Shahpur. A case of molestation had been registered against him. When asked about the alleged misbehaviour by the police towards the students, the SP said there was a gap of communication.

The arguments reportedly began when the police told the complainant that she had to stay at Ranital so that her statement could be recorded before the magistrate. Students termed it harassment. However, this was a mandatory procedure of law that had to be followed, he said.
