Sangrur: In an extortion case, a Sangrur court has fixed February 5 as the next date of hearing. "On last hearing on January 8, the local court had acquitted Rajasthan police constable Ghanaihaya Lal, whom cops had accused of smuggling opium and shown a recovery of 5-kg opium from him last year. Drive to check noise pollution
Chandigarh: In order to check vehicular noise pollution, the state government on Monday directed the authorities to launch a special statewide drive to ensure strict compliance of Motor vehicle Act and provisions of the Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act in this regard. Logo contest on massacre centenary
Chandigarh: The Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, will hold a designing contest to choose the logo for the Jallianwala Bagh Centenary Day, commemorating the 100 years of massacre on April 13. Chabbewal (Hoshiarpur): Farmers of the Chabbewal constituency chose a unique way to express their gratitude to CM Capt Amarinder Singh for loan waiver by organising "Kisanathon - a thanksgiving marathon". A programme was held at Chabbewal in which MLA Dr Raj Kumar distributed loan waiver certificates among 600 farmers who had taken loans from cooperative societies. Abohar: Lt Gen Cherish Mathson, GOC-in-C, South Western Command, on Monday named the main road in Niwaru Military Station in Rajasthan as “Lt Puneet Nath Dutt Marg”. The ceremony was organised by Laungewala Brigade with full military grandeur in the presence of Anita Dutt, mother of Lt Puneet Nath Dutt, Ashoka Chakra (posthumous), and Lt Gen VS Sreenivas, GOC, Konark Corps. Lt Puneet Nath Dutt, a gallant officer commissioned into 1/11 Gorkha Rifles, made the supreme sacrifice on July 20, 1997, while combating Pakistan terrorists in the Kashmir valley. OC
‘Bibi’, who promoted girls’ education, dies at 95
Abohar: Harbaksh Kaur Hayer of Kala Tibba village near Abohar, known as “Bibi Ji”, who promoted the cause of girls’ education, died at 95 on Sunday night. In 2001, she had set up a trust in the memory of her husband Bhag Singh Hayer by donating 26.5 acres, 5 km from Abohar town, on the Seetogunno road and Rs 2 crore for raising Bhag Singh Hayer Khalsa College for Women and hostel. She had arranged vehicles to bring students from more than 70 villages of Punjab and neighbouring states to the college daily. She had developed an orchard on seven acres to grow kinnow to be served to students free of cost. OC

Hoshiarpur: The Saini community is once again up in arms against the Backward Caste (BC) status given to them by the previous government. Urging the CM to withdraw the notification dated September 12, 2016, by which the Saini community was added to the BC list, they said they were against the reservation on caste basis. OC
