Mansa, November 24

Irked over the love marriage of his sister, a local resident and his relatives allegedly killed a youth by setting him on fire.

Sources said some persons kidnapped 17-year-old Jaspreet Singh from his house near Baghwala gurdwara here last night.

His burnt body was recovered this morning. He was allegedly taken to a closed rice mill, where his hands and legs were tied, a cloth was inserted in his mouth and he was set on fire after some inflammable material was poured on him.

In a statement to the police, deceased’s father Surat Singh alleged that his elder son Kulwinder Singh had married a girl, Raju, in their neighbourhood against the wishes of her family two years ago.

The couple was blessed with a child a few days ago. Following this, Kulwinder’s brother Jaspreet Singh reportedly asked Raju’s relative to distribute sweets. Irked over this, Raju’s brother and his relatives set Jaspreet on fire and threw his body in an open ground.

Sukhjit Singh, Station House Officer, Mansa city-1 police station, said, “On the statement of the deceased’s father Surat Singh, we have registered a case against girl’s brother Jashan Singh, cousin Gurjit Singh and another youth Raju and started further investigations.”

The accused would be arrested soon, he added.

Enmity in family

He was kidnapped from his house on Saturday night. His burnt body was found on Sunday. His hands and legs were tied and a cloth was inserted in his mouth. The police have booked his sister-in-law’s brother and his relatives.
