Mohali: Punjabi singer Baltaj Khan sustained three bullet injuries, one in the abdomen, when attacked late this evening. A resident of Balongi, he was shifted to a private hospital. His condition is said to be critical. SSP Harcharan Singh Bhullar said Baltaj and his wife Sandeep Kaur were out to buy fruit when three unidentified youths riding a motorcycle opened fire. His wife reportedly escaped unhurt. The police say the crime may have been committed due to personal rivalry. On Sandeep Kaur's statement, a case of attempt to murder has been filed with the Balongi police station. TNS

One booked for abusing woman

Chandigarh: The UT police have booked an unknown person for using abusive language with a woman on phone. According to the police, the victim reported that an unknown person called her and used abusive language on May 29. The police were informed about the incident following which the matter was investigated. A case under Section 354-A (sexual harassment) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against the unknown person at the Sector 11 police station. TNS

Two arrested with intoxicants

Lalru: The Lelhi police arrested two persons and seized 5,400 intoxicant tablets from them at a naka on Thursday. The suspects have been identified as Surjit Kumar and Varinder Kumar, both residents of Kharar. The police said a naka was laid near the ITI intersection near Lalru on Thursday. A Haryana Roadways bus, which was coming from the Ambala side, was signalled to stop for checking. On suspicion, the police checked bags of the suspects and recovered 5,400 intoxicant tablets from them. The police later arrested them. Meanwhile, a case under the NDPS Act has been registered against them at the Lalru police station. Further probe is on, said the police. OC

One caught with stolen bike

Ambala: The police have arrested Ravi, a resident of Ambala Cantonment, and claimed to have recovered a stolen motorcycle from him, officials said here on Thursday. The police said another resident of Ambala Cantonment, also named Ravi, had reported that his motorcycle was stolen from near Indra Park in Ambala Cantonment on April 4. “During investigation, the police laid hands on the vehicle thief and recovered the stolen bike,” the officials said, adding that the suspect would be produced before a local court on Friday. Woman held for fraud

Ambala: The district police have arrested a woman for immigration fraud, officials said here on Thursday. According to the police, on May 26, Deepak of Barara had reported that Manjit Singh of Tarn Taran and his woman accomplice duped him on the pretext of sending him abroad. They took a large amount from him in March and April. However, they neither sent him abroad nor returned his money, the complainant alleged. The police brought the woman on production warrant and produced her before a local court, which sent her to judicial custody, the officials said. TNS

Ambala resident held with ganja

Ambala: The police have arrested a resident of Ambala City and claimed to have recovered 1.5 kg of ganja from him. According to the police, the suspect was arrested during the checking of suspicious elements near an underbridge in Manmohan Nagar here and his search yielded the contraband. The suspect will be produced before a local court on Friday. TNS
