Chandigarh, November 13
Punjab has decided to pay Rs 2,500 per acre as compensation to small and marginal farmers who have not burnt paddy straw. Agriculture Secretary Kahan Singh Pannu said farmers cultivating non-basmati and owning land up to 5 acres would get Rs 2,500 per acre compensation for not burning paddy residue.
He said farmers who met the criteria would have to submit a self-declaration performa with the panchayat concerned by November 30. The compensation amount would be credited to the bank account of the eligible farmer.
Pannu appealed to the farmers not to burn paddy residue as it was a violation of the orders of the Supreme Court and warned of strict action against violators. — TNS
